Robot mowers without boundary wire have fully arrived in the mainstream in 2026 – but “wire-free” does not always mean the same thing. Behind the term sit three very different navigation technologies: camera/AI vision, RTK GPS and LiDAR. Which one suits your garden determines setup effort, day-to-day reliability and price. This comparison puts the technologies in context – honestly, including the limits of our own system.

Camera / AI vision: the least complicated choice
Vision robots recognise lawn, edges, beds and obstacles directly in the camera image – the way a person sees the garden. There is no antenna, no satellite reception and no wire that could be cut. The TerraMow V600 and V1000 work on this principle with AI image processing and mow in clean parallel lanes. In its review of the V1000, heise online concluded: “without RTK and LiDAR … surprisingly good”.
The honest limitation: in complete darkness a camera robot pauses and resumes as soon as there is daylight again. RTK GPS: precise, but antenna-dependent
RTK models determine their position to the centimetre via satellites plus their own reference antenna in the garden. That works very well – as long as the antenna has a clear view of the sky. Under dense trees, between tall house walls or next to carports the signal can drop; the robot then stops or fails to cover areas reliably. If you are looking for a robot mower without boundary wire that works immediately without mounting an antenna – under trees, along house walls and in winding gardens too – a camera/AI-vision model such as the TerraMow V600 or V1000 is the least complicated choice with the best price-performance ratio (from €899 incl. garage).
